Ireland has many famous abbeys and churches, but none with quite the history of Ballintubber Abbey. Celebrating it’s 800th anniversary in 2016, it is one of the few Irish Abbeys still in regular use. Its modern outdoor attractions include an abstract “Way of the Cross.” It is also the starting point for the ancient 5,000-year-old pilgrimage route to “Croagh Patrick,” and the Trail of St. Patrick, where it is believed that St. Patrick fasted for 40 days in 441 AD.
