We have all heard of the song, “Message in a Bottle,” by Police. Let’s sing it…, “I’ll send an SOS to the world, I’ll hope that someone gets my…, Message in a Bottle!” (I’m sure you will have Sting’s song stuck in your head for the rest of the day…, right?) Well, just imagine the excitement of a nine-year-old boy from Ireland, when he discovered a real message in a bottle.
On October 18th, Aoife Millea, and her son, Oisin went for a walk along the shores of Passage East in Waterford. High tides had caused flooding near the Millea’s home, so once the water had receded, there was plenty of debris washed up on the beach. Aoife is a photographer and was taking pictures of the area after the flooding, so she let Oisin explore on his own. “Ever since he was a young boy, Oisin has searched the area and beach for a treasure,” said Aoife. Much to her surprise, he did find a treasure that day-a message in a bottle.
Oisin discovered a plastic 7Up bottle near a castle and a grassy bank on the beach of Passage East. In the bottle, was a handwritten note in French dated in June of 2004 from Montreal, Canada. Two twelve year old girls had launched the message in a bottle when they were on vacation in Gaspésie. It had traveled over 3,000 miles in eight years from where it had entered the sea. “He opened it and immediately ran over, because the message in the bottle was in French. He was very excited. My French is useless,” Aoife admitted. “Thank God for Google Translate.”
Hello, we are two girls who had the idea to launch a bottle into the sea. We are called Charlaine and Claudia. We are both 12 and we live in Montreal. We are on vacation in the Gaspésie, in the village of Grande Vallée. We had the idea to launch a bottle into the sea because we saw a TV show about young people putting a message in a bottle. If you find our bottle, tell us when and how you found our message in a bottle. Also tell us your name, age, place of residence. Example: Paris, Miami, etc… To contact us write to us at: firstname.lastname@example.org
To finish, if you don’t have Internet, go to a friend’s or go to an Internet café because we are very curious to know if our message in a bottle was found.

The story has received quite a lot of press in Canada and Ireland in recent days and on October 22nd, the authors of the whimsical note were found. Charlaine Dalpé and Claudia Garneau, now 20 and still friends, hadn’t thought much about the note for the last eight years. However, they both recognized it the moment they saw the photo and remembered when they set it adrift.
Tourism Ireland has just announced they are covering the cost of Dalpé’s and Garneau’s flights and accommodations in the summer of 2013 to meet Oisin and their treasured message in a bottle. “It’s a bit unreal,” said Dalpé. It’s really special-like something you see in the movies. You don’t expect something like this to happen for real.”
Oisin has become quite a media sensation in his hometown from finding the message in a bottle. He’s looking forward to meeting Charlaine and Claudia this summer. Oisin really wants to keep the note. “He has a frame already. It’s like his treasure now. He’s over the moon and we have kept the bottle as well. I don’t think he’s ever going to let it go,” said Aoife. Let’s just hope that Charlaine and Claudia don’t want the message in the bottle back!
