In our 2021 travel survey, 48% of the respondents said that what they miss most from traveling is escaping from everyday life. Travel indeed offers us a chance to experience new cultures and connect with other people, and in turn, it allows us to leave our comfort zones and daily lives behind even just for a week. But for those looking for a truly unique and immersive journey, rail is the way to go.
Traveling by train is nothing new; train travel has been around since the 19th century. Switzerland is a country that is well-known for its scenic rail routes that take visitors through glacier lakes, snow-capped mountains and vast stretches of farmland. In Switzerland, train travel is not just a way of transportation but an experience in and of itself. Let’s explore some of the scenic rail trips through Switzerland that you can take with Tenon Tours.
Interlaken – Jungfraujoch
The Jungfrau Railway runs year-round to the highest train station in Europe: Jungfraujoch. Sitting high at over 3500 meters above sea level, this rail trip offers unmatched views of mountains Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau — not to mention the Aletsch Glacier that stretches 13 miles.
From Interlaken, the journey only takes one and a half hours. Upon arrival, you’ll be able to explore ice caves or the nearby Sphinx Observatory.
Zermatt – Gornergrat
A visit to the Gornergrat Summit is a bucket list trip that one should not pass up while visiting Switzerland. The rail journey takes about 30 minutes from the resort town Zermatt. The unbelievable views – including those of the famous Swiss mountain peak, the Matterhorn – are sure to take your breath away (figuratively, of course!) You’ll have pristine views of the summit for the entire duration of the trip.
Zermatt – St. Moritz
A truly scenic rail trip through Switzerland is the 8-hour excursion from Zermatt to St. Moritz. You’ll travel aboard the iconic Glacier Express, known as the “king of panoramic trains,” while soaking in the awe-inspiring views of the Swiss landscape. Some of the most notable scenery you’ll witness is the Swiss Alps along the deep Rhine Valley.
St. Moritz – Lugano
Board the Bernina Express to embark on this 4-hour scenic journey. You’ll head from Switzerland into Northern Italy before changing to the Bernina Express Bus to take you back into Switzerland. Sightings include glaciers, mountain tops, and views of Lake Poschiavo.
Lugano – Lucerne
Explore Switzerland by rail – and water! This rail trip will take you from Lugano, located in the Italian-speaking region of Switzerland, to Lucerne via the Gotthard Panorama Express. This panoramic train travels to the heart of the country, passing through UNESCO heritage sites and vineyards. When you book with Tenon Tours, we recommend enjoying a boat ride on Lake Lucerne from Flüelen!
This trip idea is inspired by our sample itinerary, Grand Train Tour of Switzerland.
