The Donkey Sanctuary: Cork, Ireland

What exactly is a donkey sanctuary? That was my question when I was looking for things to do on a
vacation in Ireland. A donkey sanctuary is similar to a dog or cat animal shelter in the US, except they only have donkeys and mules. If you’re looking to experience something truly unique while traveling around Ireland, the Donkey Sanctuary is a must-see!

The Donkey Sanctuary in Cork was established in 1987 as a place to take care of and improve conditions for donkeys throughout Ireland. To date, the Donkey Sanctuary has cared for more than 15,000 donkeys. They are an international charity that works all over the world to help improve conditions for donkeys.

In addition to caring for the donkeys, the sanctuary also offers training on donkey welfare and the proper care, and they offer foster programs to make it possible for people to adopt a donkey, if they please.

The Donkey Sanctuary is open to the public Monday-Friday from 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM and on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM with free admission and free parking every day. They even have a gift shop where visitors can purchase donkey-themed items and every purchase goes towards helping the donkeys.

Not only is this a great charity, but it’s also something very unique to experience while on vacation in Ireland. This is a perfect free trip for families because the kids will love to see and pet all of the donkeys that have been rescued by the Donkey Sanctuary.
