Buck at the Royal Britannia in Edinburgh!

Buck just got back from his fantastic British vacation. Learn about his travels and experiences below:

Where did you travel Buck?:
“England, Wales and Scotland”

What made you want to travel to the UK?:
“We are just that kind of couple that loves Great Britain and everything about it – the culture, the people and the history.”

Who traveled with you?:
“My wife. We’ll be celebrating our 40th anniversary next year – probably with a cruise around the British Isles!”

Where were the top 3 places to visit on your wish list?:
“Actually, we have taken two trips in two years. Our last involved stops in Windsor, York and Edinburgh. The year before we went to Cardiff and Bristol. York and pretty much all of Scotland were spectacular – but so was Cardiff the previous year. And nothing was even remotely a disappointment.”

*Tough question alert! What was the best part about your vacation?:
“On the last trip, definitely Edinburgh. We spent four days there and would have been happy to just move in and live there!”

What made you want to travel with Tenon Tours?:
“I’d been in touch with Tenon for a long time before we finally booked a trip. (7 years!) We had thought about Ireland way back when, but job changes and various other things interfered. When we finally decided to make the first trip there was no other choice. The main advantages were, sensitivity to what we wanted in the way of accommodations and great support while we were on the trips. On our first trip, the plane was FOUR HOURS late departing, which upset all of our logistics. We managed to work our way through the issues, but Tenon was GREAT about getting us refunds on missed rail (strike) and the other things we had to reorganize.”

How was your experience with your personal Travel Specialist?:
“We’ve been helped by as many as half a dozen Tenon reps, but Janet Dudley has been simply awesome through both trips and we expect to book through Tenon next time we go.”

Do you wish you prepared better for any specific part of the trip?:
“With Tenon’s help – and two previous trips to the UK in the late ’90s – we were pretty well prepared. Any time you travel, be prepared to make adjustments to your plans if needed.”

Did travel insurance come in handy for you?:
“We purchased it and wouldn’t consider traveling without it. I think it saved us some on the first trip when the plane was late and the rail plans got messed up.”

What are your favorite souvenirs you brought home?:
“The memories. Experiences are more valuable than things.”

Were there any unplanned parts of your trip that wound up turning into one of your favorite travel stories?:
“We ended up spending more time in Edinburgh than we planned – but that ended up being a blessing. One of the great cities we’ve ever been in. Also, on a whim, we ate at a TURKISH restaurant in York. PHENOMENAL!”

Where do you want to travel next?:
“Ireland!”

Do you have any other advice to offer up for future travelers?:
“1. Know what kind of accommodations you want. We like comfortable, US style hotels. (We are both in our late 60s and like comfortable beds! We did quaint when we were young.) Some hotels don’t have A/C which can be an issue in the summer. Just communicate about what you expect and you will be much happier. 2. If you plan to drive, be careful and plan for everything to take about twice as long as it would in the US or Canada.”
