Krista Shuler shares her experiences of traveling to Ireland to celebrate her anniversary and run in the Rock and Roll Half Marathon. Read on to see what she has to say about her incredible trip to the Emerald Isle.
What destination(s) did you visit and why?
We traveled to Ireland and we have always wanted to go there. We are runners, so we decided to celebrate 15 years of marriage by running the Dublin Rock and Roll Half Marathon and exploring Ireland with close friends. We are also Star Wars fans and really wanted to visit Skellig Michael.
Who did you travel with?
My husband, Eric, and I traveled with his best friend, Eddie, and his wife Ashley. We also traveled with a little green plush monkey. Since our six year old son couldn’t come with us, we decided to bring a little piece of him with us, so we brought a “back up” of his favorite toy. And he was a huge hit with t he locals!
Where were the three top places to visit on your wish list? Did you make it to them and what did you think?
1. Skellig Michael Islands
We were able to take a boat tour around the island, but due to the weather we were unable to get on the island. The water was very choppy. It was still one of the most amazing parts of our adventure!
2. The Blarney Castle
We wanted to kiss the Blarney Stone. And we did! (Even the monkey!) The Blarney Castle Grounds and Gardens were absolutely gorgeous! It definitely exceeded our expectations.
3. Guinness Brewery
The Guinness Brewery Tour was INCREDIBLE! We felt like we were at Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, only with beer! One of our favorites for sure! It was way more than we expected! We could have spent the entire day there. And the views of Dublin from The Gravity Bar were just…, WOW!!!
What was the best part about your vacation?
Just exploring Ireland with dear friends. Our friends moved from Texas to North Carolina a year ago and it was the perfect adventure to play catch-up and spend some quality time together. We had the best of both worlds.
In Dublin, there was so much to do and see! The city was so busy. The locals were so friendly. We LOVED having two days of the Hop On, Hop Off Bus Tour! On the first day, we mostly stayed on the bus and used it to plan out the next day’s stops! That was PERFECT!
After leaving Dublin and heading west, we were able to enjoy the calm, relaxing and peaceful countryside and coastline of beautiful Ireland! And our B&B’s were fantastic!
Why did you choose Tenon Tours? What advantages did you have booking with Tenon Tours?
We knew that we wanted to visit Ireland but we didn’t know where to begin. Eric found Tenon Tours online. The biggest advantage to booking with Tenon Tours was having someone put together a custom itinerary, which included everything that we wanted to see and do…, and then some!
Anything to add about your personal sales representatives?
Taryn was WONDERFUL! She put together the perfect itinerary for us. Both Taryn and Molly kept in constant contact with us during the planning process to insure that all of our questions and concerns were answered, as I had plenty!
Any advice about the weather?
According to the locals, we got very lucky! The weather was PERFECT! Of the seven days that we were there, six of them were GORGEOUS!!! All sunshine and clear skies, as well as a cool temperature. Coming from Texas, we are used to extreme heat so it was WONDERFUL!
What are your favorite souvenirs you brought home?
All of the memories of our trip. So many photos. And even though we didn’t get to see any puffins, we still brought an adorable plush puffin home for our son and he LOVED IT!
