Lisa, her husband and two adorable children just got back from their wonderful Scottish adventure! Read more about their travels below:

What made you want to travel Scotland?:

“Our kids wanted to see castles and I’m a huge Outlander fan.”

Where were the top 3 places to visit on your wish list? If you made it to them, what did you think?:
“Edinburgh and Inverness were our two main destinations. We loved them both.”

Tough question alert! What was the best part about your vacation?:
“I think we all loved the Jacobite Cruise on Loch Ness and entry to the Urquhart Castle the most. Everything we did was amazing, though.”

Do you wish you prepared better for any specific part of the trip?:
“We probably should have researched a little more about each place so we could spend our time more wisely.”

Do you have any advice to offer up about the weather?:
“Definitely take a jacket. Even a light one will do. We went the first part of June and it was in the 60’s and 70’s. Be sure to grab an umbrella.”

Did travel insurance come in handy for you?:
“We bought travel insurance but ended up not using it. It’s still a good thing to have just in case!”

What are your favorite souvenirs you brought home?:
“We brought home magnets, key chains, mugs, and some other things for friends and family. Our kids were given 2 pounds a piece from a couple in Stirling for being well behaved at the restaurant. Our daughter spent one pound on a talking telescope and brought the other one home for grandma. My son kept both his to show his friends when he goes back to school.”

What would your top suggestions be for attractions to take the kids to?:

1. Jacobite Cruise
2. Any and all castles are a must
3. Convince your kids to climb Arthur’s Seat

How did you feel about driving on the “wrong” side of the road?:
“My husband did all the driving and he did an excellent job. We were both nervous at first but after the first day, it wasn’t too scary.”

What tips do you have for others planning a self-drive tour?:
“Get an automatic car! We were set for a manual but luckily the car rental had one automatic left. And maybe look up some YouTube videos on how to drive in Scotland because it can be a little confusing.” Great advice Lisa! Check out our Self-Drive Planning Guide for some more tips!

Any advice for the “round-abouts” or “circles” while driving?:
“There are a lot of round-abouts and you definitely have to pay attention to the roads you need to take. Google maps helped a lot with that! Just stick to the left and drive at a reasonable speed.”

Overall, how did you feel about your vacation to Scotland?
“We loved everything about our trip! Our kids loved going to the castles and museums. Kilchurn Castle on Loch Awe will always be one of my favorite memories. We were up early and there was no one there. We had the whole castle to ourselves. We really wish we could have stayed longer but we can’t wait to go back in the future!”

What destination is next on your list?:
“We want to eventually go back to Scotland to explore more of the Highlands and maybe do an Ireland tour.”

Thank you Lisa! We hope to assist you and your family again in the future!
