J.K. Rowling has lived in Edinburgh since the 90’s. It was at the Elephant House Cafe in Edinburgh where Rowling first began to write about Harry Potter. Scotland’s capital features gothic architecture and interesting graveyards giving Rowling her inspiration. Follow J.K. Rowling through Edinburgh and visit these Harry Potter locations in Scotland!

1. The Elephant House Cafe

As mentioned above, Rowling began writing the fascinating series in this little cafe right in the heart of Edinburgh.

2. George Heriot’s School

This building structure looks like it is coming straight out of a fairy tale. Most people will agree that this school is the inspiration for Howgwarts as it is right around the corner from The Elephant House Cafe.

3. Greyfriars Kirkyard

In this graveyard, there is a tombstone for a gentleman named “Thomas Riddell” who is the namesake of Rowling’s Voldemort.

4. Spoon

Spoon, back in the 90’s, was named Nicolson’s Cafe, another spot where Rowling was said to have spent a lot of time writing about Harry’s adventures.

5. Victoria Street

One of the most famously photographed streets in Edinburgh, Victoria Street serves as inspiration for the famous Diagon Alley.

6. Balmoral Hotel

J.K. Rowling spent some time in this hotel in room 552 writing the last of the Harry Potter books. She signed the statue of Hermes, Greek Goddess of Travel, located in the room.

7. The Royal Mile

Search for Rowling’s golden hand prints! Her handprints are on the Royal Mile as gratitude for winning the annual Edinburgh Award for having a positive impact on the city.

8. Jacobite Steam Train

Catch the Hogwarts Express to the highlands! Fans wanting to follow in Harry’s footsteps can board the Jacobite Steam Train in Fort William, Scotland. The company running the Jacobite service provided Warner Brothers with the Hogwarts Express train in all eight of the films.
