Italy is home to some of the most beautiful and historical castles in Europe. From partial ruins to renovated and refurbished structures, these castles are incredible to witness in person. Walk the halls of history or take a peek in the dark cells that once held incarcerated public figures. Here’s our list of 10 historical castles in Italy.

CASTEL BELFORT

The first castle in Italy we’ll talk about is Castel Belfort. Although this castle is partially in ruins, it offers travelers a fascinating view. What makes this site worth seeing is its architecture. After a devasting fire in 1670, the castle was reconstructed and, oddly enough, looks more like a modern structure than a medieval one. The ruins are located in the Italian Dolomites, leaving a spectacular place for visitors to explore and take photographs.

CASTEL DELL’OVO

Another historical castle in Italy to visit is Castel dell’Ovo, which translates to “Castle of the Egg.”  Legend has it that an egg was buried underground where the castle was constructed as a warning. The story goes that if the egg breaks, then the castle would fall. Fortunately for us, the castle still stands. Located in Naples, this castle offers a bit more than just cool scenery. Visitors can also enjoy art exhibits and special events. It’s also a popular photo spot for engagement and wedding photos!

CASTEL SANT’ANGELO

Next on our list is Castel Sant’Angelo. This historic castle in Italy began construction in the year 135 and has been renovated over the years to include a corridor, a statue of an angel, and five floors. As a result, guests can enjoy the numerous chambers, residential rooms, and even cells that once housed historical figures of its time. As a bonus, the upper levels provide a stunning view of the city of Rome.

CASTELL’ARQUATO

Castell’Arquato is the perfect stop for those visiting Piacenza, Italy. The castle has maintained its medieval appearance so that visitors can imagine what it once looked like during the 10th century when it was built. Although like many historical castles in Italy, it has undergone renovations to keep it standing and safe for tourists. The castle has appeared in a few movies as well, including Ladyhawk.

CASTELLO DEL BUONCONSIGLIO

Next on our list is Castello del Buionconsiglio. Built around 1239, this castle boasts a beautiful Italian park and a regional museum of art. Stroll the age-old structure of prince-bishops, witness several different eras of architecture and view numerous art collections including manuscripts and paintings such as “Ciclo dei Mesi.”

CASTELLO SARACENO

The ruins of this historic castle in Italy offer Tenon travelers a glimpse into the life of Taormina, an ancient Greek town. The structures that are still standing today include a tower, cistern, and underground corridor.  Situated atop a mountain, this castle is not for the faint of heart; it’s quite the hike to make it to the top.

CASTELLO SFORZESCO

Located in Milan, Castello Sforzesco is a famous historic castle. You’ll definitely want to make a stop at this restored castle if you are visiting Milan. If you’re feeling inspired, there are several museums and galleries to keep you entertained and curious including Pieta Rondanini, Michelangelo’s last sculpture. Other collections range from the 15th to 18th centuries.

CASTLE OF FENIS

Next on our list is the Castle of Fenis. As you may have guessed, this is located in the Italian town of Fenis and is, therefore, a major attraction in the area. It has all the furnishings a traveler might expect of a castle: imposing towers, battlemented walls and a scenic view of the surrounding landscape. Guests can enjoy viewing the chapel, weaponry room, pantry, kitchen and other notable rooms.

ODESCALCHI CASTLE

Odescalchi Castle is the perfect pairing of history and beauty. Enjoy views of a wondrous lake while walking through 500 years of history, dating back to the 15th century. One of the most powerful families of the Renaissance lived in this castle and – as a bonus – it’s located a short distance away from the city of Rome.

ROCCA MAGGIORE

Last but certainly not least is Rocca Maggiore in Assissi. Only partially open to visitors, this still remains an impressive structure to this day. A popular photo spot during the sunset hours, Rocca Maggiore sits atop a hillside and stretches across a dramatic skyline.
