Scotland is known for its many great whiskies, and there are multiple distilleries throughout the country. Each distillery offers a unique tour that will give you the inside scoop on how their whisky is made. As a bonus, many distilleries offer tastings as well as tours!
The whisky trail goes through Scotland’s best-known whisky region, Speyside. Eight distilleries and a cooperage make up the trail, and we’re going to walk you through each one.
Located outside of Forres, this distillery was first established in 1898. Benromach is known for its handcrafted single malt whisky-making process, and is owned by the Urquhart family who became the sole owner in 1915. They offer a variety of tours, each accompanied by a tasting.
This used to be Cardow Farm, but now is a distillery located in Knockando. They first began making whisky in 1811, even though they didn’t have a license. Their tours offer tastings of their Cardhu 12-Year-Old Single Malt Whisky and the Cardhu Special Cask Reserve.
Although this distillery is no longer in production, tours of Dallas Dhu still take place year round. Enjoy an audio guide with audio-visual presentations that take you back to the first barrel of whisky they distilled in 1899.
Located in Dufftown, the Glenfiddich distillery was built by the Grant family in 1887. Their whisky can be found the world over. Tours range in time and tastings, offering cask samples, malt whisky and 12-, 15- and 18-year-old Scotch.
This whisky is named after it’s founder, Glen Grant, and is located in Rothes. These tours offer a unique experience, and teach you the proper way to taste Scottish whisky.
You won’t want to miss the tours at Glenlivet. This distillery was the winner of the Best Visitor Attraction Award at the 2013 Scottish Thistle Awards, and their Scotch is famous around the world.
This world-famous distillery is located in Elgin, Scotland. Gain valuable insight into their single malt whisky-making process, which they have been producing since 1897. Your tour guide may even be a distillery craftsman themselves!
Although Speyside Cooperage is not a distillery, it is a must-see part of Scotland’s Whisky Trail. The only working cooperage in the United Kingdom, Speyside produces whisky casks from the very best American oak. These casks are said to be a necessity to the refined whisky industry in Scotland.
This distillery has been operating since 1786 and is home to a famous whisky, Chivas Regal. Considered pioneers in the art of blending, the Chivas Brothers are well-versed in the fine art of ageing Scotch.
We recommend visiting Scotland’s Whisky Trail in May or September when festivals are taking place. This allows for the optimal experience. However, the distilleries on this trail are open year-round.
Our chauffeur tours are the perfect opportunity for whisky lovers. Our drivers can offer local insight into the Speyside region while privately (and safely) transporting you from distillery to distillery.
