You may have learned this geologist’s explanation of how the Giant’s Causeway was formed, but we all know that an Irish giant created this masterpiece in Northern Ireland. Right? ?
A long, long time ago, Fionn mac Cumhaill (Finn MacCool) built a causeway to bridge across to Scotland. While in the Highlands, he caused a lot of trouble (Probably from drinking too much Scottish whisky) and raided the livestock of a fellow Scottish giant, Benandonner, before returning to the Emerald Isle. In retaliation and to get revenge, Benandonner sprinted back over the causeway to find, raid, and fight Fionn mac Cumhaill.Fortunately, the wife of Fionn mac Cumhaill, Oonagh, saw Benandonner speeding across the steps. She realized that Benandonner was much bigger than Fionn and that they would both be in danger if she didn’t act fast. Therefore, being quick on her toes, she dressed up her husband in baby clothes to protect him. When Benandonner arrived at the house, he asked Oonagh where Fionn was, but Oonagh told Benandonner that he was out touring in Northern Ireland. Looking around the house, Benandonner came across the baby (Fionn dressed up.). When he saw the size of the baby, he figured the father must be truly massive and far too large to fight. So, he ran back across the causeway as fast as he came, destroying it behind him. Hence, what is left now are only the basalt columns of various sizes.
If you ever visit the Giant’s Causeway, make sure you get a picture of Fionn’s boot and the organ he used to play for Oonagh! Lessons to be learned:
