Taste of Summertime in Svalbard

Arrive in Svalbard’s only town, Longyearbyen, and transfer from the airport to your hotel.

You’ll have a fascinating introduction to the town, its history and surroundings on a guided tour. Learn about the arctic lifestyle with long summer days and the midnight sun, and long, dark winters with the magnificent Northern Lights. Learn about the mining history, the part Svalbard plays in international research (climate and other areas) that is currently taking place and pass the Global Seed Vault. There will be photo stops along the way. Route may be altered due to weather.

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel, then transfer to the harbor to embark a hybrid-electric catamaran for a cruise to Billefjorden and Nordenskiöldbreen glacier.

This unique vessel will provide a quiet and more environmentally friendly journey through breathtaking landscapes, with opportunities to view wildlife—perhaps reindeer, seals, whales and, with some luck, polar bears. 

Please note: This trip focuses mainly on nature experiences and the boat does not dock. We reserve the right to change this with short notice. 

Tonight, enjoy the tasting menu at Huset Restaurant, a local restaurant featuring food characterized by Nordic techniques and flavor combinations, with ingredients coming mainly from Svalbard and the arctic region.

After breakfast at your hotel, explore the town on your own.

This evening, experience the magic of being outdoors at 78* north! Depart Longyearbyen and drive through Advent Valley with mountains looming on each side. The landscape is bathed in the midnight sun as we arrive at Camp Berentz. Wildlife are often seen here, including Svalbard reindeer, grouse and fox. Enjoy a campfire, delicious reindeer stew, drinks and dessert, and learn about Svalbard’s most famous resident, the polar bear.

Svalbard is a paradise for outdoor adventures, and you have a choice today (subject to activity schedule):

Kayaking, 4 hours
This kayaking trip is suitable for anyone who likes adventure. After receiving your equipment, instruction, safety orientation and environmental information, begin your serene paddle on the beautiful Adventsfjorden. Glide past the majestic Hiorthfjellet mountain and the former mining town of Hiorthamn. You’ll be up close to the birds and wildlife, surrounded by the stunning landscapes and wonderful nature experience as you kayak. 

Dog Sledding on Wheels, 4 hours
Explore the gorgeous tundra landscape in Adventdalen as you’re pulled by a husky team in a specially-designed cart! Transfer from your hotel to the husky kennel, 10 km outside Longyearbyen. After you’re outfitted with warm clothes and boots, say hello to the friendly huskies and harness them up for the ride. You will get the chance to both be a passenger and to drive the cart, and you will get all necessary instructions before take-off. We crisscross Adventdalen and explore its rich wildlife which includes birds and reindeer. The energy from the eager huskies is contagious! 

Sea Fishing, 4 hours
After you embark the sturdy fishing boat, your guides equip you with the necessary gear including fishing rods and a floatation suit. The best fishing area is not far out on the Isfjord, and if it isn’t too late in the season, thousands of nesting birds may watch you eagerly from the cliffs. It goes without saying that if you hook a fish you will be the most popular person in the area, and optimistic gulls, puffins and fulmars will flock around the boat hoping for a fish head or delicious fish guts for lunch! 

Hiking*, 5 hours
What could be better than experiencing the unique Arctic landscape from a mountaintop? Surrounded by magnificent views in all directions, this is a hike you should not miss! The hike begins in Nybyen, at the highest point in Longyearbyen. The route takes us through the valley towards the glacier. From here, we cross the glacier and head up a stony ridge to Sarkofagen. The glacier crossing is a simple one, as it is a stable glacier, and we will not need to use ropes. The guide will go first and lead the way and you can concentrate on enjoying the spectacular nature. If we are lucky, we might find a fossil on our way! 

*This hike requires good physical fitness and is not suitable for those with limited mobility since the terrain is uneven, steep and slippery. Additional optional activities are available and must be pre-booked: A visit to Svalbard Brewery, an ATV Safari, guided tour to Coal Mine #3.
