Erin just got back from her fabulous Self-Drive Tour of Ireland! Read more about her journey below:

Where did you travel?:

Why did you pick this as your destination?:

“Visiting Ireland has been a life long dream of mine. My distant relatives came to American from County Cork, Ireland. Even though my husband has been when he was a child, we decided to visit Ireland for our 5th wedding anniversary.”

Were you celebrating anything special with this trip?:

“My husband Adam and I came to Ireland to celebrate our 5th wedding anniversary. We have been together for a total of 8 years and love to travel together!”

Where were the top 3 places to visit on your wish list?:

“Honestly, we were excited about all of it and knew we would have a blast no matter what. The three top places we wanted to see were the Cliffs of Moher, Guinness Storehouse, and the all of the Irish pubs! We made it to all, and all exceeded our expectations. The Cliffs were breathtaking, the Guinness Storehouse was so much fun, and we made sure to stop at as many pubs as possible and we were never disappointed.”

What was the best part about your vacation?:
“THE ENTIRE THING!!! Seriously, we had the best time. Just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, it did! Favorite locations include Kinsale and Galway!”

Why did you choose Tenon Tours?:

“We chose Tenon Tours because my cousin had used them for their honeymoon to Ireland. They had a great trip as well so I reached out to Tenon Tours for our trip. So many advantages to booking with Tenon Tours – everything is set up for you – car, hotels, additional tour options. Everything that they set up for us went off without a hitch. I can’t thank them enough.”

Anything to add about your personal sales representatives?:

“Everyone that we dealt with responded very quickly to all of my questions (and I had a a lot of questions!). Great team, great company.”

Do you wish you prepared better for any specific part of the trip?:
“We wish we had hiking boots with us, and we wish we knew there was the opportunity to do a lot of walking along the Cliffs of Moher.”

Any advice about the weather?:

“Any time we had to be outside for something the weather turned out to be great. We did wear our rain coats almost every day just in case.”

Tell us about any new friends you may have met along the way.:

“We met Tahdig at the Palace Bar in Dublin : )”

What are your favorite souvenirs you brought home?:
“We bought Aran sweaters and t-shirts from the Brazen Head. I also got earrings from a jeweler in Kinsale, handmade right in her shop in Kinsale.”

Were there any unplanned parts of your trip that wound up turning into one of your favorite travel stories?:
“We drove the Dingle peninsula and had one of the best drives of our lives! This led us to Connors Pass and it was scary yet amazing. We saw some amazing sights on this drive. I also ended up getting a tattoo in Galway!”

What destination is next on your list?:
“There are several! We would definitely do Ireland again to see more. We also want to get to Italy.”

If this was a romantic vacation share the favorite romantic thing you did.:

“We had our anniversary dinner at Finn’s Table in Kinsale. This was by far the best meal we have ever eaten (and we are foodies). It was a small restaurant and we shared a bottle of wine and just enjoyed the evening.”

Did you learn any new Gaelic or Irish phrases?:
“Yes! Gra meaning love (my new tattoo) and cead mile failte (a hundred thousand welcomes) – you will see this everywhere in Ireland.”

How did you feel about driving on the “wrong” side of the road?:

“We were nervous at first but it didn’t take long for my husband to get used to it. It was really not bad at all. Ireland has great signage!”

What tips do you have for others planning a self-drive tour?:

“Do it. You can see so much while driving and it enhanced our experience.”

How did you go about planning your itinerary, picking sights, arranging them and figuring out how long to stay?:

“We stayed as long as our jobs would allow and let Tenon Tours pick our itinerary based on that. They did a great job! After I knew where we were going, I then chose extra tours and picked sights to see with a lot of research.”

Any advice for getting around? Using maps, GPS, following road signs, etc..:

“You definitely need a GPS. We did not purchase one from the rental car company, but I used my phone. I had international service for a minimal fee and navigation on my phone worked great.”

Any additional comments on your vacation:

“Try all the beer that you can! We loved Hop House, Tom Creans. Eat all of the seafood that you can. Not only is their seafood amazing, but ALL of the food is amazing. So fresh! Kilkenny was a cute little town, we loved it. Galway was also a favorite – enjoyed all of the street performers on the pedestrian walk. So much live music everywhere in Ireland, it is really amazing. Overall, Ireland makes a great vacation – we would go back in a heartbeat.”
