Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Iceland

Arrive at Keflavík International Airport and then head to Reykjavík, where you’ll stay the first night. To get yourself acquainted with the city, we recommend taking a hop-on/hop-off sightseeing bus tour. These inexpensive tours allow you to get on and off at any of the designated points of interest.

Optional Activities: Reykjavík hop-on/hop-off bus tour, Blue Lagoon, whale watching from Reykjavík

Overnight in Reykjavík
Tenon Recommends: Fosshotel Rauðará

Day 2: Reykjavík to Selfoss

Start your journey around the country by visiting three of Iceland’s best-known sites. Þingvellir National Park, the site of Iceland’s first parliament, was founded in 930. Þingvellir was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its cultural value. The Þingvellir Lake with its surroundings also presents a place of great geological interest. Passing Laugarvatn lake, you will visit the Geysir geothermal area and its abundant hot springs. Anxiously wait for the most active of the geysers, Strokkur, which spouts a column of water into the air every 5 to 10 minutes. Then head to the Gullfoss waterfall, the Golden Falls that drop in two cascades deep into the gorge of the Hvítá glacial river. Continue toward the southern coast and end the day in the area of Selfoss or Hvolsvöllur.

Optional Activities: Fontana spa, glacier tour, snorkeling at Silfra

Overnight in Selfoss
Tenon Recommends: Hotel Anna
(Breakfast included)

Day 3: Selfoss to Landmannalaugar and Skogafoss

After breakfast, journey toward the colorful Landmannalaugar natural reserve area with views of Iceland’s most active volcano, Mt. Hekla. You have many possibilities for short hikes in the fascinating volcanic area and the option to bathe in the warm geothermal spring. The route then continues along the scenic Fjallabak Highland road and passes by Eldgjá through the area of Torfajökull, part of the northern volcanic zone, which is the most active volcanic area in Iceland today. On the way back, the road leads past the Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls.

Overnight in Selfoss
Tenon Recommends: Hotel Anna
(Breakfast included)

Day 4: Selfoss to Borgarnes

Start making your way towards Nesjavellir, set at the foot of the volcano Hengill on the southern shore of Lake Þingvallavatn. From the lake, the route continues through the scenic countryside to Hvalfjörður bay and across the hills and meadows to Borgarfjörður. The waterfalls of Hraunfossar and Barnafoss, the historical site of Reykholt and the hot spring Deildartunguhver are among the highlights of the day.

Overnight in Borgarnes
Tenon Recommends: Hotel Borgarnes
(Breakfast included)

Day 5: Borgarnes to Patreksfjörður

Depart the beautiful Borgarfjörður area and head toward the Westfjords along the coastal road. Enjoy the views of Breiðafjörður bay and its islands as well as slopes with tiny waterfalls and lush vegetation. The route will take you all the way to the westernmost point of Europe, at Látrabjarg, where you can take time to explore the bird cliffs and see thousands of nesting seabirds, including puffins and guillemots.

Overnight in Patreksfjörður
Tenon Recommends: Fosshotel Westfjords
(Breakfast included)

Day 6: Patreksfjörður to Snæfellsnes

Today you will head to Brjánslækur where you board the ferry across Breiðafjörður bay. Sailing to Stykkishólmur offers beautiful views of the distant mountains of the Westfjords as well as the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. The ferry passes the island of Flatey, where you will get a glimpse of the old houses near the harbor. Disembark in Stykkishólmur and continue along the northern coast of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, driving through small fishing towns and villages and around the Snæfellsjökull glacier and volcano.

Optional Activities: Vatnshellir cave tour

Overnight in Snæfellsnes
Tenon Recommends: Fosshotel Hellnar
(Breakfast included)

Day 7: Snæfellsnes to Reykjavík

Jaunt along the southern side of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Snæfellsnes is often referred to as “Iceland in Miniature” because practically all natural phenomena that can be found in Iceland can be seen here – only on a much smaller scale! The Snæfellsnes Peninsula is also the only area in Iceland where mineral water springs are found. Travel towards Borgarnes and through the Hvalfjörður submarine tunnel back to Reykjavík.

Optional Activities: Blue Lagoon, horseback riding near Reykjavík

Overnight in Reykjavík
Tenon Recommends: Fosshotel Raudara
(Breakfast included)

Day 8: Depart Iceland

Depart from the Keflavík airport, or continue onward to more Icelandic adventures!
