Planning an international vacation can be an intimidating process, but we’re here to make it simple. From choosing the proper luggage size to making the most of your wardrobe, we’ve outlined everything you need to know when packing for a trip to Europe.
Choosing the Right Luggage
When it comes to packing, the first thing you’ll need to do is make sure that you have appropriate luggage. This includes color, size and durability.
You may be wondering – does the color of my luggage matter? It does! When choosing luggage for your trip, we recommend going with neutral colors. Brightly colored bags can make for an easy target for sticky fingers.
The size of your luggage is something to consider as well. Of course, you’ll want to make sure that it serves two purposes: it offers enough storage space for your clothing and accessories, and that it will fit in your rental car. Your car will be chosen at the discretion of Tenon Tours and will be large enough to fit one carry-on and one checked bag per traveler. If you plan on packing more than that, please notify your Travel Specialist or BYSS TEAM member or you may be required to upgrade your car at pick up.
Multi-Purpose Your Wardrobe
You can make the most of your luggage space if you multi-purpose your wardrobe.
Pack in layers! Bring a combination of undershirts, T-shirts, long-sleeved shirts and jackets – especially when traveling to coastal or windy destinations.
Pack mix-and-match items that can be worn more than once! This includes joggers, tights, tank tops, etc.
Buy the Right Travel Backpack
…That is, if you plan on taking a travel backpack. It’s the most convenient way to keep your personal items on you while traveling. Our Operations Coordinator, Margo, recommends that all first-time travelers keep everything in their backpacks. If you don’t own one already, there are many options that will keep everything organized, compact and light for long days away from your accommodations.
Recommendations from our team:
“I used Thule for years. Good quality.” – Margo, Operations Coordinator
“I recommend the Weekender from ebags.” – Art, Managing Director
“I am currently using this backpack (thanks Amazon!) and I really like it. Despite it looking quite bulky in the link provided, it’s actually very slim and I like that. But it can also fit a decent amount. It also has a strap to put it on top of a suitcase!” – Liz M., Director of Sales
“You won’t get this in the US as it’s a Marks and Spencer bag but it’s the best backpack I ever bought. I really don’t like black so I like that this is navy polka dot. It has a load of little sections and zips to store things in – at the front, inside and the back of the bag. There are section dividers so if I’m going somewhere with the laptop it can go in there. I love the color inside as I can actually see what’s in it and lastly, the back part of it slides over a suitcase handle.” – Liz A., Product Manager
“This is the backpack I just bought for my trip to Spain and it worked wonderfully. I love pockets and areas to organize things and this has plenty of it.” – Gaby P., Product Manager
Important Travel Documents
You definitely don’t want to end up at the airport’s security checkpoint to realize you forgot your passport, or that you arrive at your rental car pick-up to find that you don’t have your driver’s license.
Here is a quick checklist of the documents you’ll want to bring with you on any international trip:
- Driver’s license (and an international driving permit if required in your destination)
- Physical vaccine cards (we recommend this for all our vaccinated travelers)
